Mustard Seed Software, LLC - Team

It's a job that requires people who are engaged listeners, who have an awareness of different kinds of markets, who have expert knowledge in specific fields of software development, and who think creatively based on all the different kinds of information they have at their disposal.

Simeon H.K. Fitch

Principal & Senior Software Engineer

"I thrive on being a collaborative partner and knowing that our creative thinking is making scientific breakthroughs available to more people."

  • Favorite software solution: Any problem that is novel and requires persistence to solve. I enjoy designing software architectures which address specific client needs while paving the way for future growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Why I work for Mustard Seed: I founded the company so that I could do work that matters. Fullness of vocation is important to me and, and now that I've grown the business and can take on larger projects, it's been extremely rewarding to share these opportunities a larger team. I know people who are doing incredible research, and I love that our software makes their inventions accessible to a wider user population.
  • Favorite book: The Yoga Sutras of PataƱjali
  • When I'm not writing software: Making, fixing, and tinkering. Starting audacious projects I'll never finish. Building and flying R/C aircraft. Spending time at home with my family.
Selected publications by Simeon H.K. Fitch.

D. Ben Guseman

Software Engineer

"Developing software that addresses meaningful scientific problems allows me to make an important difference for clients, engineer-users, and the people who benefit from their ingenuity."

  • Favorite software solution: Anything that is interesting in terms of its complexity and for which I have the freedom to develop an elegant, robust, reusable, and ultimately, satisfying solution.
  • Why I work for Mustard Seed: Family and career are both priorities here, and our clients are great to work with. Also, Simeon encourages us to be forward-thinking and creative in our approach to problems, which affords me plenty of opportunities to produce the sound software engineering solutions that I most enjoy.
  • Favorite book: Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Alan Paton's Cry, the Beloved Country, Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Stephen King's Gunslinger series.
  • When I'm not writing software: Having three children under four years old keeps me busy at home. Sleep is essentially a thing of the past, but I really enjoy the time I spend with my family. Other than that, I love watching football and hockey when I get the chance. Go Pittsburgh!

A. Ben Hocking

Associate Software Engineer

"Camaraderie in client relationships allows me to support them from afar."

  • Most fun software solution: Saving lives and preventing accidents by writing software so that airplanes can be built in a way that inspectors can do their job more effectively. In writing code to help meet that goal, I came up with a solution solve dozens of problems at one time. So, it was like skinning an onion. I had to peel away more to anticipate new exceptions to the problem. Always, I have to reframe and simplify.
  • Why I work for Mustard Seed Software: Mustard Seed is a good fit for me because Simeon encourages us to keep growing and learning. My physics and engineering backgrounds blend well here. Our clients are bold and clever, while also understanding and articulate.
  • Favorite book: Joseph Heller's Catch 22
  • When I'm not writing software: Running the Atlanta marathon this past Thanksgiving weekend was really rewarding. For my 40th birthday in May 2010, I'll run the 40 mile Strolling Jim.
